Information for IHM students in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic

Information for IHM students

in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic (as of September 18, 2020)

With regard to the unfavourable development of the epidemiological situation in connection with the spread of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 causing infectious disease COVID-19, the Regional Hygiene Station of the Capital City of Prague issued Regulation No. 12/2020 of September 18, 2020 banning the personal presence of students in classes while studying at universities in the capital city of Prague. For this reason, the Institute of Hospitality Management in Prague (IHM) is starting distance teaching with effect from September 21, 2020.

The above-mentioned emergency measure is valid from September 21 to October 31, 2020 and will be updated in particular regarding the national development in the epidemiological situation. The ban on personal presence of students does not apply to:

  • Individual visits to libraries and study rooms;
  • individual consultations;
  • testing in the presence of a maximum of 10 people;
  • laboratory, experimental or artistic work in the presence of a maximum of 15 people;
  • clinical and practical teaching and practice.

IHM will maintain operation in the school building at Svídnická 506/1, 181 00 Prague 8, for students, employees and the public, from Monday to Thursday from 7.00 am to 4.30 pm. On Friday, the school building will be completely closed.

As of September 18, 2020, the special measure of the Ministry of Health No. 15757 / 2020-35 / MIN / KAN of September 17, 2020 is also in force, which prohibits all persons from moving and staying without respiratory protective equipment (nose, mouth) as is a respirator, mask, mouthpiece, scarf, shawl or other means that prevents the spread of droplets, in all internal areas of the school (classrooms, offices, common areas, etc.). Persons with symptoms of COVID-19 are strictly forbidden to enter the school building.

The IHM takes the following measures to limit the personal presence of students in teaching:

1. ACADEMIC PART

Provision of teaching

Teaching will take place online in a distance form with the maximum possible extent while respecting the established timetables (lectures, seminars, exercises). Teaching will take place synchronously (video conferencing) and asynchronously (recorded videos). IHM has equipped selected classrooms with technology where videos are shot, or the teaching can be realized by videoconference. All employees will have technology installed on their computers so that they can communicate by video conference. The precise determination of teaching tools and educational methods enabling distance teaching between student and teacher will be set by a separate measure of the Rector of the IHM, which will be issued in the 1st week of winter semester 2020, and will follow the Rector’s Measure No. 16/2020 - Organization of the academic year 2020/2021. The implementation of IHM study programs in a distance form will be continuously evaluated, in accordance with the requirements of the National Accreditation Office for Higher Education.

Unlike the summer semester 2020, in the winter semester 2020 the online distance teaching must be fully provided in all subjects of both lectures and seminars and exercises, with maximum effort to keep the days and times of teaching according to the established timetables. It is completely inadmissible to replace online distance teaching only with remote access to study materials (e.g. publication of materials for lectures, seminars and exercises in * .pdf or * .pptx format in IHM IS).

Practice

There are no restrictions on students' practice and the practice takes place without any restrictions in full accordance with the study plan of the relevant study program.

Credits, examinations and registration of evaluations for students

For students who take a credit or an examination in the distance form, the evaluation will be registered only in the IHM IS, additionally during a personal visit to the school building in the study report (index). When the student takes credits or exams in person, the academic worker registers the evaluation both in the study report (index) and in the IHM IS. The examination period for the summer semester 2020 is extended until October 30, 2020. Taking credits and exams is possible until December 31, 2020, both in person and in the distance form. The personal and distance form of taking credits and exams is equivalent.

Office hours of IHM academic workers

All internal academic workers of IHM are obliged to increase the weekly scope of office hours from 90 minutes to double, while office hours of 90 minutes must be physically held in the personal presence of the academic worker in the school building, another 90 minutes of office hours are variable (either in personal presence in the school building or by videoconference). Academic workers are obliged to consult with IHM students both in person and in the distance form. External academic workers of the IHM are obliged to keep office hours for at least 30 minutes per week, while their representation for resolving situations is fully provided by the heads of the relevant departments.

Seminar works, final qualification theses, state final examinations

In order to reduce the amount of paper, IHM students can submit seminar works electronically, either by sending them to the email of the relevant academic worker, or insert them into the Homework Vault of the relevant subject in the IHM IS. The selected submission option will be communicated by the relevant IHM academic worker during the 1st week of the winter semester 2020. IHM academic workers are obliged to consult the process of processing final qualification theses (bachelor's theses, diploma theses), in person during office hours, by videoconference (in office hours or by prior agreement at another date) and by email. The nearest date of state final examinations is in the week from January 25 to 29, 2021.

Ceremonies

All planned ceremonies are cancelled and an alternative date is not set. Thus, the graduation ceremony of IHM graduates and the ceremonial inauguration of the Rector planned for October 8, 2020 will not take place. The ceremonial matriculations of first-year students, which were to take place in November 2020, are cancelled as well.

The diploma and the diploma supplement will be issued by the Study Department from  October 8, 2020 to a specific graduate against a handwritten signature on receipt of the document. Representation on the basis of a power of attorney is not possible. The IHM is ready to organize graduation ceremonies as soon as the epidemiological situation allows. IHM graduates will be allowed to attend the ceremonies, if they are interested, on an alternative date, which will be announced in time.

With regard to the fact that on October 8, 2020 the graduation ceremony of IHM graduates and the ceremonial inauguration of the Rector will not take place, the Rector's leave announced for this day will be cancelled and on Thursday October 8, 2020 teaching will take place according to class schedules.

Due to the fact that the ceremonial matriculation of 1st year students will not take place, the study reports (indexes) will be handed over to students individually after November 1, 2020.
